A City I Finally Met Alone

Downtown Providence — stuck in February freeze and cold much the same as my first couple months in single life. Only my own layers protect me from winter’s bite. My brain ventures through good and bad memories while the armor’s donned. Weird Providence wasn’t the original plan, but here we are.

Before today, I’d never been to this city alone. I only ever came for date nights or for my birthday with friends last year. This is just me, my music, and maybe two people I passed on a Monday stroll down Weybosset. This is coming back to myself.

Despite the quiet being different from my usual New York experiences, this reminded me of those adventures also. Tingles from freedom to explore without commentary and appeasement run to my fingers and toes with each block. (Maybe that’s the 20 degree weather, but still.) No venom in my ears for traveling on a whim or taking a detour.

This is for me. And I feel alive for the first time in months.

Which solo travel moment do you hold dearest in your memory? I’d love if you shared in the comments!
