What I Packed to Survive a Gloucester Heat Wave

A week before I left for a family Gloucester overnight, my delusional brain thought I’d roll out of bed really early, put a cute outfit on, and explore the town with Mom’s cousin. Instead, I woke up with a sweaty back and a “Nope” seeing 90-degree heat.

Here are the bare bones I buried in my overnight bag.

Sunscreen All Day

While fashion and makeup help us feel beautiful, sunscreen is the most important thing for long-term beauty (and overall health). Sunscreen SPF 15 and up protects your skin barrier and prevents skin cancer, so these are especially important during a blistering heat wave!

Anti-Chafe Everywhere

Plus size ghouls get it. Chub rub from dresses/skirts and shorts SUCKS. It especially sucks on my feet because I work from home all the time and almost never wear shoes anymore.

These Megababe sticks were my first anti-chafe product test, and they help me immensely. I slathered these on for my first trip to Salem last month (wore a dress and flats), and I returned home blister-free.

Some Boring Hygiene Essentials

Yeah, not luxurious, but you’ve got to take care of basic hygiene even when you go away. Since my Gloucester overnight trip was more about surviving rather than goth fashion thriving, I packed light. I only brought the hair tie on my wrist, my hairbrush, contact lenses with the solution, and my toothbrush and tongue scraper with toothpaste.

Easy.

Lightweight Adventure Tech

My travels required my phone constantly. Not only did I have train tickets, but I also needed to keep my phone alive for entertainment. (One bus, six trains, and an Uber for the weekend was a lot.) All I brought tech-wise included headphones, my MagSafe phone charger, and my portable Anker brick.

My Consistent Meds

And now…for the climactic finale…medication! I’m thankful that I don’t need much, but I have a few things I take in the mornings to feel my best. (It’s really just Lexapro, famotidine, esomeprazole, and drugstore brand Zyrtec.)

Medication is normal including SSRI’s. No point in keeping it a “dirty little secret”.

A scary good aesthetic means nothing without scary good self-care. What have you been doing to beat the blistering heat?
